Wearing your Birkenstocks, hobbling and popping an orthotic in your shoe may bring relief in the short term but nothing is better than optimising the incredible function and design of the foot

Starting off on the Right Foot

Our feet and ankles are some of the hardest workers in our body and are often neglected when it comes to injury and seeking treatment. It’s time we stepped in the right direction and gave feet the attention they deserve.
Our foot and ankle joints link our body to the ground. They are the first shock absorbers when we take a step. There are many layers of beautifully designed bones, ligaments and muscles with a phenomenal ability to distribute load and impact.

Unfortunately, we walk little, run even less and we demand smooth, level surfaces. Our shoes cushion and support. Bush walking is rare and rock hopping is down right unusual. Even our stairs are a predictable and legislated max 190mm. While this makes walking a breeze, it is destroying foot dexterity. Ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, stress fractures, Morton’s neuroma and Sever’s lesions are common and have people reaching for pain relief with medication, braces, supportive footwear and orthotics.

Target Physio, working closely with GPs, lower-limb orthopaedic specialists and podiatrists, aims always to target pain and function, enabling fitness. Individual physiotherapy treatment focuses on restoring lost range, reducing swelling, re-conditioning muscle and speeding up balance reaction times to off-load painful joints.

Target Physiotherapists use mobilisation techniques and deep tissue release as well as ultrasound guided facilitation of the intrinsic foot muscles. Target Physio may offer Dry Needling of specific areas on the foot to get improvement in stubborn muscle groups. A wide range of individual and group training with Clinical Pilates is available. This allows an advanced level of foot and ankle conditioning with integration into whole body function.

Principle Target Physio Fiona Pringle says: “Wearing your Birkenstocks, hobbling and popping an orthotic in your shoe may bring relief in the short term but nothing is better than optimising the incredible function and design of the foot.”
Even well worn feet have scope, so get back on your feet with Target Physio.
